Y.S.O.C. (Young Survivor of Ovarian Cancer) My name is La Shawn Woodward. I am a 22 year old survivor of ovarian cancer. I was diagnosed at the young age of 14. This disease had a really adverse affect on my life. I suffered mental and physical stress. I went through early menopause, which destroyed my ability to bare chidren. It was hard for me to function as a normal adolescent, and during the dating process it was difficult to express and explain what I went through. Growing up as a survivor of this type of cancer made it challenging for me to relate to people when asked to express my feelings and emotions. I can only imagine how other young survivors and actual patients feel, therefore, this has stimulated me to build a nonprofit organization. | |||||||||||||||||||||||

My goals are: | - To make the public aware that ovarian cancer excists not only in older females, but in younger females as well - To start a nation wide advocacy group for women 30 years old and younge, of all races and nationalities (YSOC-Young Survivors of Ovarian Cancer) - To have the media and public more involved with ovarian cancer awareness - To make my immediate metropolitan area more aware of ovarian cancer - To inform African American and other minority women about ovarian cancer within their community, explain theri risks for the disease, and provide information regarding testing and detections - And to find these survivors of ovarian cancer I feel that ovarian cancer should be addressed more affectively. There are very few doctors, peiodicals, commercials, etc. that address the awareness of ovarian cancer. The public should see that this cancer affects many faces, young and old.
